My name is Katie Bailey.  I am a May 2005 graduate from the University of Mississippi with a degree in International Business and French.  For the past seven years of my life I have served as an advocate for the Prevention and Awareness of School Violence.  School Violence and Violence in general has become an epidemic in the United States.  We have lost too many lives due to senseless acts of violence.  I'll never forget watching the news a few years ago and hearing of the school shooting in Kentucky.  I was in absolute shock, but also wary of going to school the next day.  I didn't like having to feel scared to go to school.  At that point I didn't know what I could do to get involved but I knew that I had to do something.  Shortly after the shooting at Columbine High School, my local high school adopted a program.  This program was called  S.A.V.E (Students Against Violence Everywhere).  S.A.V.E. is a national, non-profit organization that emphasizes the importance of violence free schools.  I joined the program immediately to take a stand against school violence.  This was a wonderful program and certainly helped to decrease the rates of violence that were being felt in my school district.  All children should be able to attend school free of fear.  Schools should serve as a safe haven for all children. My ultimate goal is that all schools throughout the United States be required to have some type of violence prevention program within their school.  I have been involved with this particular program since 1999 and continue my involvement still in college.  I am working to spread the message throughout the state of Arkansas of violence prevention.  Violence is a problem, however, there is a solution.  If we are all willing to commit ourselves, and commit to implementing violence prevention programs, then we truly can stop the violence.
